In his resignation letter to council leader Abi Brown, Mr Jellyman states: "I cannot in good conscience remain in my position following the poor decision making that led to the demolition of ‘Capo’ by Vincent Woropay, on Festival Way.

Now Mr Jellyman has today resigned as both deputy council leader and cabinet member for regeneration, infrastructure and heritage, saying it was his error in not challenging 'officers' poor advice' shortly before Christmas that resulted in Capo being demolished. Since the incident, the council has launched an investigation into what happened, and vowed to restore the sculpture – indicating that it was always possible to relocate the sculpture sensitively. The red brick sculpture - created by Vincent Woropay for the 1986 Garden Festival - was destroyed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council contractors during roadworks to widen Festival Way two weeks ago. Mr Jellyman has admitted supporting proposals to remove the Capo artwork after being told it 'could not survive being relocated', telling officers that 'nothing lasts forever'.
